M.A.T. in Early Childhood Education
The Master of Arts in Teaching in Early Childhood Education
provides teacher candidates with the opportunity to develop
skills in practice, theory, leadership, scholarship, and communication
skills using Montessori approach as applied to the PK-3 learner
as well as to the Pre-K to Kindergarten learner.

Associate in Science (AS) Degree ProgramPrepares students for employment in a variety of positions working with young children and their families. The Certificates and Degrees offered are designed to allow students to meet requirements for various levels of entry into the early childhood education field. The degree in combination with 6 months work experience prepares students for immediate employment as teachers in private early childhood programs for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. The degree along with 12 months of full time experience meet the requirements of the State of Hawaiʻi  Department of Human Services (DHS) to be directors of early childhood programs.

There are several pathways that students graduating with the AS can follow within the State of Hawaiʻi. Students may continue to UH West Oʻahu Bachelor in Social Science in Early Childhood Education, or UH Manoa Bachelor of Education in Elementary and Early Childhood Education or in Early Childhood and Special Education. Students who plan to transfer are strongly encouraged to seek academic advising upon admission to Honolulu Community College.

Two Associate degree focuses offered:

  1. Certificate of Competence in Child Development Associate (CDA) Preparation

Associate in Science (AS) Degree Program

Associate degree is accredited by National Association for the Education of Young Children

Students with an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education become preschool teachers, assistant teachers, and/or go on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree. Those already working in preschools and infant/toddler centers can take course that may make them eligible for pay raises.

There are several pathways that students graduating with the AS can follow within the State of Hawaiʻi. Students may continue to UH West Oʻahu Bachelor in Social Science in Early Childhood Education, or UH Manoa Bachelor of Education in Elementary and Early Childhood Education or in Early Childhood and Special Education. Students who plan to transfer are strongly encouraged to seek academic advising upon admission to Maui College.

Degrees that can be earned:

  1. 9-credit Preschool CDA Certificate of Competence (CO). Meets education part of CDA requirements.  Additional components and experience needed to earn the CDA.

    22-credit Early Childhood Education Certificate of Competence (CO).  3.2 GPA needed to earn the CO.  Demonstrates student’s competence in ECED courses.

  1. Certificate of Achievement (CA). Includes courses that are prerequisite for UH West O’ahu Bachelor’s in Social Science Early Childhood Education concentration degree.  For students
    with an AA or AS in another field who want to enter the UHWO degree program.

  1. Associate in Science (AS). Degree accredited by NAEYC.
    Students who earn the degree have automatic admission to UHWO BA in Social Science, ECED concentration online degree program.
    Students interested in UH Mānoa PreK/SPED Bachelor’s in Education can work closely with program coordinator and academic counselor to choose electives that are prerequisite for that
    program.

There are several pathways that students graduating with the AS can follow within the State of Hawaiʻi. Students may continue on with UH West Oʻahu for a Bachelor’s in Social Science in Early Childhood Education (online). Students may also go to UH Manoa to obtain a Bachelor’s of Education in Elementary and Early Childhood Education or in Early Childhood and Special Education. This AS-ECE degree can also be articulated with the UH Hilo Psychology program or with Chaminade University of Honolulu’s Early Childhood Education program. Students are strongly encouraged to seek academic advising upon admission to Hawaiʻi Community College.

The training that students receive blends theory and practice through coursework and hands-on experiences in the real world of a preschool program preparing them to become preschool teachers, assistant teachers and/or to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at the Child Development Center at Kauaʻi Community College.

There are several pathways that students graduating with the AS can follow within the State of Hawaiʻi. Students may continue to UH West Oʻahu Bachelor in Social Science in Early Childhood Education, or UH Manoa Bachelor of Education in Elementary and Early Childhood Education or in Early Childhood and Special Education. Students who plan to transfer are strongly encouraged to seek academic advising upon admission to Kauaʻi Community College.
